Meet Kay

Below Knee Amputee

Kay is one of those people that has a great, ‘Can Do’ attitude. She isn’t going to let anything stop her. Though she was nervous when she was told she would become an amputee, to her it was all about her moving forward.

“At first, I wasn’t going to have an amputation. I had battled with this for over a year, trying to get well with this foot,” says Kay. “And my doctor kept saying you’re going to have to be amputated. I was nervous and I didn’t know what to expect.”

We at Fourroux were fortunate to meet Kay during this period and helped show her that life continues after amputation. Although she is a relatively new amputee, Kay is functioning quite well and is getting back to living her life.

“Here at Fourroux, they go above and beyond.” explains Kay. “They want to know what you want. And you tell them what you want to achieve – to be able to go outside, walk around in the yard, just normal, and work with my flowers. They go the distance to see that you get what you want.”

Kay loves to share with other amputees she meets that life as an amputee can be successful. Whenever she gets the chance, she helps counsel those who are facing exactly the same emotions that she faced when becoming an amputee.

“The last time I was in, there was this little man that came to Fourroux and he said, ‘I- I just– I hope I get to walk again.’ And I sat with him and I told him, ‘You’re going to walk again. You will walk again. You’re going to get in that fishing boat and you’re going to go fishing again,” explains Kay.

“He said, ‘Yeah, but I’m scared. When I put those things on I’m afraid I’m going to fall,’ continues Kay. “And I said, ‘No, not a bit.’ And I jumped up and I said, ‘Look at me. I was the same way. I thought I was going to fall.’ And I said, ‘You don’t. You just get up, and start walking.’”

“There’s nothing that’s going to hold me back from doing anything. I’ve been able to accomplish everything that I’ve set out to do, plus more. This is like family here, the way they operate. I think if it wasn’t for family, you wouldn’t keep going. Fourroux is my second family.”
