Below Knee Amputee

One of Dee’s favorite pastimes is riding horses. She can’t imagine what it would be like not being able to enjoy one of her favorite hobbies.

“I would be miserable if I didn’t have a good-fitting prosthetic. It allows me to live my life and do the things I want to do, which is what everybody wants,” says Dee. “Initially, my goal was just to get back riding ‘cause that’s my happy place.”

Dee understands the value in finding a good prosthetist and a prosthetic facility that listens and works with you to determine together what you need based on how you live your life.

“You see so many amputees that have a very negative outlook and it’s hard not to. I mean, I’ve run into people that are in their wheelchair and I’m like ‘why don’t you have a prosthetic?’” recalls Dee. “Because I can’t get one that fits” or “I can’t” you know, it’s hard. I mean it’s like grounding. You ground someone, and it’s hard to live your life. I think they give up. They cannot find a company to do what they need so they give up.

“When I went to Fourroux, it was totally different,” explains Dee. “I have met people that care, people that take the time to sit down and listen to what you want to do, what your goals are, how active you are, that you want to go chase your grand kids, and then try to come up with solutions to get you where you need to be.”

So, Dee’s message to those who are struggling with their prosthetics is clear. “There are prosthetics out there that can do what you need to do. I don’t think there’s anybody that’s too hard to fit. I do everything that I did before. It’s terrifying to think you’re giving up everything. I understand that mentality, but don’t give up. Go to Fourroux!”
